FEATURED COACH

Joey Mello Newport, RI
Classes: Level 1 , US Sailing , Level 2 , US Sailing , First Aid ,... [ more ]
As a coach I believe you have to teach the inner workings of what the sailor needs to do and why they are doing it. It is this understanding and knowledge that helps young sailors be successful not just in one boat and class but also long term through their sailing career. [ more ]

470

470

The 470 was designed in 1963 by Frenchman Andre Cornu. It is currently one of the classes sailed in the Olympics and has been so since 1976. In 1988, the 470 was added for women as the first all women's Olympic class. It is a fiberglass planing hull. There are three sails, main, jib and spinnaker. A total crew weight between 110 kg and 145 kg is a good range. A tall crew and a light, but strong crew is ideal. Women and men/mixed crews race separately. The class is very one-design and great for those that are technically inclined. Specifications (Metric/English): Length Overall 4.7 m / 15' 5" Length Waterline 4.4 m / 14' 7" Beam 1.68 m/ 5' 6" Draft .5 m / 6" Draft (CB down).5 m / 3' 6" Weight 120 kg / 264 lbs Mast 6.78m / 22' 3" Boom 2.65m / 8' 8" Spinnaker Pole 1.90 m / 6' 3" Jib 3.58 sq. m/ 39 sq. ft.
