SAFETY

As racing sailors become more skilled at sailing, it’s easy to forget that there are risks involved in the sport. It is important to remember those risks and think about how to minimize them. That’s the purpose of the articles and links in this section.

Unfortunately a number of excellent sailboat racers have lost their lives while racing or preparing to race, in both small boats and larger boats. The articles here tell some of their stories so we can learn from them and keep safety in mind.

Taking safety for granted is one of the biggest mistakes a sailor can make. Being aware of the risks in the sport and taking the smart precautions is just as big a part of a successful campaign as all the other elements, and arguably the most important.
