Great sailing venue in the Gulf of Mexico with wind most times of the year except bad thunderstorms in summer. Winter cold fronts bring in strong northwesterlies with great waves. After frontal passage the wind clocks right to Northeast and then strong easterly flow for a few days following depending on the strength of the gradient. Southerly winds a day or two prior to the cold front often provide some of the best sailing with warm temperatures and flatter seas. Sea breezes in the spring and fall are moderate (usually under 15 knots) but provide nice sailing conditions. April and October are great months for training with fairly consistent winds.

Current runs north (in flood) and south (ebb) once exiting Clearwater pass and there are times when the race course is close enough to the pass that one can make big gains by playing the flow in or out of the pass. Tacking along the beach in a southerly often works if there's a strong flood tide.

Easterlies off the shore are very puffy so watch for the pressure differences and often sailing toward the beach will be fast as the puffs tend to be stronger near shore.

The Radisson right next door to the Clearwater sailing center is a nice hotel and within walking distance. The Sheraton across the street is also nice. Cheaper options can be found over the bridge on Clearwater Beach or on the mainland. Check Clearwater Yacht Club homepage for links.

Clearwater Yacht Club's homepage has lots of info but most regattas are held on the south side of the pass at the Clearwater Sailing Center.
