The privacy of those visiting our web site is important to US Sailing. If you are a US Sailing member and wish to retain your privacy, please contact us at 401-342-7900 or you may send an email to that effect to membership@ussailing.org, and we will act on your request. This will prevent personal information from showing in the Member Directory. Organizers of US Sailing-sanctioned events (only) will have special access to member ID numbers and expiration dates in order to verify entry eligibility.
We urge parents to discuss with their children the importance of protecting the confidentiality of personally identifiable information.
What Information is Collected
When joining or renewing a membership, we may ask visitors to provide personal information including name, email address, telephone number and (in the case of youth members) date of birth.
How We Might Use the Information
This information is used to help us contact members and conduct our business. We occasionally sell, distribute, trade or otherwise transfer personally identifiable information obtained from a user to third parties that in our opinion will make responsible use of it. Information on youth members is never sold or otherwise distributed.
Third-Party Sites and Sponsors
Our site contains links to other sites the information practices of which may be different from ours. Visitors should consult the other sites’ privacy notices as they may differ from ours.
Cookies and How We Use Them
Cookies are used to gather basic tracking information and to monitor the presentation of advertisements and are placed on your hard drive by many major web sites. We place cookies only with your permission and then only to identify you when you return to our web site. We do not link the information collected through cookies to personally identifiable information provided by users who participate in our activities. Cookies do not contain any information that is, in itself, personally identifying.
Posting of information concerning members on the web site
There are numerous occasions when visitors to our web site want to determine the membership status of members or to contact a member of a committee, council, or certified group. To facilitate this and at the same time protect the privacy of individual members, we treat information differently depending on the extent to which members are active in US Sailing. Certain committees and groups at their choice display members’ personal information and certifications.
Important points
- A privacy flag allows members, even those serving on committees, to keep ALL their information totally confidential. If they are judges, race officers or serve on a committee that decides to show its members’ contact information, this information will still show in the Find a Race Official or specific committee member pages.
- Members of committees get the same access as any other member.
- Anonymous users will only be able to confirm that a person is a member. They will be able to see name and city, but not phone numbers, addresses or even eddresses of committee members. This information will still be available elsewhere in some cases (Find Race Official, committee list on the Committee Directory site), but not from the Membership Directory.
- Anonymous users will be able to get certification information. This includes Race Official Certifications, Instructor Certifications and Keelboat Certifications.
